Santa Barbara PONY umpires come from
variety of backgrounds from the community (realtors, college students, former players
to name a few). Umpires are encouraged to model our Mission Statement.
For questions or information about our umpires, please contact:
Jason Herrera (Board Member for Umpires at: jherrera@amusementsafety.org)
The Strike Zone
As an “incentive” to encourage young (typically Mustang and Bronco) pitchers,
and to encourage batters to swing, most umpires have a liberal strike zone during
the early part of the season. As the season progresses, the strike zone becomes
tighter as pitcher’s skills improve.
Interaction with Umpires
Almost without exception, there will be calls that don’t go your way. As
hard as it is not to express frustration, we encourage players, coaches, fans, and
parents to model our Mission Statement in their reactions. Remember, our kids learn
from us by watching how we handle tough situations!
Umpires are encouraged not to interact with fans during the game, and fans are encouraged
to do the same. If you have an issue with an umpire, please contact the Umpire Director
(email above).
Umpire’s Authority
The umpire’s first job is the safety of our kids. If any situation arises in which
the umpire believes player safety is jeopardized, the umpire is empowered by the
Board to act accordingly.
Umpire’s rulings are final on the field of play. However, in the event of a disputed
call, the coach (and coach only) is allowed to discuss the matter with the umpire.
If a coach wishes to dispute an umpire’s call or decision, the dispute must be filed
according to local rules. |
